Air travel has always been an inspiring activity for many people around the world. Today, flying has become a common mode of transportation thanks to commercial airline services, as well as general aviation and private jet charter services. Private jet travel offers numerous advantages, including privacy, luxury, time efficiency, and comfort. Private jets are also known as business jets or corporate jets.
Cessna Citation is one of the most widely used private jet series in the field of private aviation.
Different Types of Private Jets
Private jets are commonly used by small groups such as friends, business partners, and family members for leisure or business purposes. These aircraft are designed and developed by manufacturers to ensure a certain level of comfort and luxury. Some of the leading private jet manufacturers include Cessna, Gulfstream, Boeing, and Airbus, as well as Delta Private Jets.

The interior of a private jet is significantly different from that of a typical commercial aircraft. Private jets are classified into various categories, each offering unique features depending on the type of aircraft and the desired budget.
Below is a breakdown of private jet categories you should know.
Types of Private Aircraft
While many people perceive private jets as assets reserved only for the ultra-wealthy, in reality, several aircraft in this segment come with relatively reasonable charter or ownership costs. Private aircraft are generally divided into the following seven main categories:
-
Very Light Jets (VLJ)
-
Light Jets
-
Mid-Size Jets
-
Super Mid-Size Jets
-
Heavy Business Jets
-
Ultra-Long Range Jets
-
Executive Airliners
Very Light Jets (VLJ)
Very Light Jets are the smallest class in the private aviation market, typically accommodating 4 to 6 passengers. Compared to other jet types, VLJs have lower operating and maintenance costs. Thanks to their compact size, they can access small airports with short runways and narrow taxiways in remote areas.
VLJs are ideal for short flights of up to 3 hours. Most VLJ charter flights are used for weekend getaways and can operate between destinations 1,500–2,000 km apart. These jets usually have small luggage compartments, under 70 cubic feet.
Popular VLJ Models:
-
Cessna Citation Mustang
-
Eclipse 500
-
Embraer Phenom 100
-
HondaJet HA-420
-
Eclipse 400
Most VLJ models are certified for single-pilot operation and have a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of under 4,500 kg.
Light Jets
Light jets have a larger passenger capacity compared to VLJs. Aircraft in this category can carry between 6 and 8 passengers per flight, with a flight range relatively similar to VLJs (2–3 hours). Light jets are also capable of landing at small airports with short runways in remote or regional locations.
This capability allows passengers to access smaller, less crowded airports, avoiding the delays and congestion commonly found at major hubs. For this reason, light jets are considered an ideal choice for business travel.
Popular Light Jet Models:
-
Hawker 400 XP
-
Dassault Falcon 10
-
Cessna Citation CJ2
-
Cessna Citation CJ3
-
Embraer Phenom 300
-
Learjet 45
-
Cessna Citation CJ4
Mid-Size Jets
Mid-size jets are among the most popular and cost-effective options in the private aviation segment. Larger than Light Jets, they can carry up to 10 passengers. Thanks to larger fuel tanks, they can fly nonstop for more than 2,000 nautical miles (around 5 hours at cruising speed). They are also capable of operating short routes just like VLJs and Light Jets.
Mid-size jets feature spacious cabins, ideal for luxurious interiors. Unlike VLJs, most mid-size jets offer stand-up headroom for adults and approximately 127 cubic feet of luggage space. They typically include lavatories, Wi-Fi connectivity, phone service, and are operated by two pilots, with a flight attendant and a small galley for in-flight catering.
They are more budget-friendly compared to larger jets while still offering the ability to land at smaller airports, similar to VLJs and Light Jets.
Common Mid-Size Jet models include:
-
Gulfstream G150
-
Cessna Citation Latitude
-
Hawker 900XP
-
Bombardier Challenger 300
-
Learjet 60
Super Mid-Size Jets
Super Mid-Size Jets are larger and faster than Mid-Size Jets, offering a more spacious cabin and higher cruising speeds. A prime example is the Bombardier Challenger 350.
These aircraft can fly non-stop for up to 7 hours, covering more than 3,500 nautical miles. Similar to Mid-Size Jets, they feature enclosed lavatories, galleys, and some models even offer stand-up showers. They are operated by two pilots and can include one flight attendant.
The cabin of Super Mid-Size Jets often features larger windows, higher ceilings, and seating for up to 14 passengers. This category is considered ideal for long-haul flights.
Popular Super Mid-Size Jet Models:
-
Bombardier Challenger 350
-
Cessna Citation Sovereign
-
Gulfstream G280
-
Gulfstream G200
-
Dassault Falcon 2000
-
Cessna Citation X
Heavy Jets
Heavy jets are more luxurious and costly to operate and maintain compared to super mid-size jets. They feature spacious cabins that can accommodate up to 19 passengers, along with large wingspans and massive fuel tanks, allowing for continuous flights of up to 9 hours (approximately 6,000 km).
These aircraft are fully equipped with lavatories, galley kitchens, upscale interiors, Wi-Fi, phone services, and various premium entertainment amenities.
However, a key drawback is that they require long runways for takeoff and landing, meaning they must operate from major, often crowded airports.
Popular heavy jet models include:
-
Bombardier Challenger 605
-
Cessna Citation Sovereign
-
Gulfstream G350
-
Dassault Falcon 900
Ultra-Long-Range Heavy Jets
This category represents a higher tier compared to standard Heavy Jets, offering an extended flight range of up to 10,000 km (6,000–6,500 nautical miles), equivalent to approximately 12 hours of nonstop flying. The spacious cabin can accommodate up to 19 passengers.
This type of aircraft became particularly popular during the Covid-19 period, as many young billionaires sought to purchase them for intercontinental travel.
They are equipped with lie-flat beds, automatic folding tables, mini refrigerators, premium seats, and numerous other luxurious amenities. The rental or purchase price of Ultra-Long-Range Jets is significantly higher than smaller categories, reflecting their exceptional luxury and comfort.
Notable models include:
-
Gulfstream V
-
Dassault Falcon 7X
-
Bombardier Global 6000
-
Bombardier Global 7500
-
Embraer Lineage 1000
Executive Airliners / Bizliners
This is the largest and most expensive category in private aviation, also known as Bizliners. These aircraft are converted from commercial airliners and can accommodate 20–50 passengers with ultra-luxurious interiors.
They are equipped with meeting rooms, bedrooms, luxury bathrooms with hot showers, bars, and private lounges. Many heads of state use this type of aircraft — for example, Air Force One (Boeing 747) for the President of the United States, which is fitted with high-security military systems.
Bizliner owners can customize the interior however they wish, as long as it does not affect flight safety. This is truly the pinnacle of luxury and style in the private aviation industry.
Popular Bizliner models include:
-
Boeing Business Jet (BBJ)
-
Airbus Corporate Jet (ACJ 380)
-
Airbus Corporate Jet (ACJ 319)
Notable Examples:
-
Former U.S. President Donald Trump owns a private Boeing 757.
-
Prince Al Waleed bin Talal owns a customized Boeing 747-400 converted into a private jet.
